Start Date: September 9, 2024
End Date: April 30 , 2025
Direct Supervisor: Dr. Stephen Van Hedger and Dr. Christine Tsang
Hours per Week: 5 hours per week
Rate of pay: $17.50 per hour

Description

We are seeking two motivated psychology students to join our research team as Research Assistants in the Huron
Auditory Perception Research Lab in the Psychology Department. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage and collaborate in a research project examining the perception of musical speech stimuli. This project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada led by Dr. Stephen Van Hedger and Dr. Christine Tsang.
Two undergraduate research assistants will play a key role in the development of a large corpus of audio files related to perceived musicality.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Acoustic Analyses
• Collaborate with research team to select open-source audio samples from web-based sources
• Participate in acoustic processing to analyze selected audio samples
• Participate in the development of a large online database to host the samples

2. Research Design and Development of Research Protocols:
• Collaborate with the research team to develop behavioural testing methodology to assess perceived
musicality of selected samples with a large online human population.
• Assist in the development of research ethics proposal

3. Online Behavioural Testing
• Using approved research ethics protocols, assist in the collection of data from a large online population
• Manage data collected and participate in preliminary statistical analyses of the data

4. Knowledge Mobilization
• Collaborate with research team to create conference presentation to disseminate results of the perceptual
study and the development of the corpus of samples

Qualifications:

Skills:

  • Strong interest in psychological research and design (credit in Psych 2130E or 2115A/B would be considered
    an asset).
  •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Creative thinker with a willingness to experiment and innovate.

Education:

  • Must have completed first year introduction to Psychology course (preferably Psych 1100E)
  • Must be enrolled as a student in  a Huron Psychology program module
