What can you do with a CURL Student Bursary? Just ask Cogie Cogan!
In summer 2023, they spent a week at VINE Sanctuary, nestled in the heart of Vermont, USA. Guided by queer leadership and rooted in ecofeminist principles, VINE has rescued and rehabilitated hundreds of farm animals seized from abusive situations. (See Kevin the turkey, Church the goat, and Val the pig below!)
Cogie says, “As a visiting scholar, I had an immersive experience living in the onsite trailer, with my neighbours being cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, and many other species. During my stay, I learned the stories of the animals and how they came to arrive at VINE. I also had conversations with volunteers and staff on site, who shared with me the ins and outs of running an animal sanctuary.” Throughout the week, Cogie gained valuable insight into the collaborative efforts that sustain the sanctuary. Fresh produce donated by a local grocery store and rescue efforts from nearby townspeople, for instance, are among some of the contributions that help to foster the rescue’s community ethos of care.
Having already completed courses like Animal Geographies at Western and Animal Welfare and Sustainability Leadership at Huron, Cogie also plans to explore Huron’s Animal Ethics and Sustainability Leadership program. We’re so glad you enjoyed your trip, Cogie!
