Introduction:
Feben Bloom sat in the back office looking out at the several feet of snow covering her pumpkin fields. It was January 2024, one of the quietest times of the year at Bloomfield Farms Inc. (Bloomfield). Bloomfield was a market and general store near Ingersoll, Ontario that sold local produce and artwork by local artists. It also had a small Christmas tree farm, and the area’s largest pumpkin patch. Bloom needed to prepare an income statement, statement of retained earnings and balance sheet for Bloomfield’s fiscal year ending December 31, 2023. Bloom gathered her bank statements and notes from her bookkeeper, brewed herself a cup of peppermint tea, and set to work.
