Objectives & Purpose

Objectives for Completion

The group started this project in 2000.  They have worked hard on a volunteer basis, and with the help at various times of a part-time archivist and a part-time oral historian to carry out this project.  At this point, the objective is to ensure the resources, and set the timetable for a concerted effort to complete the project.

Many of the women who were active after 1960 are now over 90 years old. So, it is important for us to:

  • Finish collecting and cataloguing archival materials
  • Complete the record of oral histories to be lodged in the London Women’s History Group Collection, The University of Western Ontario Archives (Western Archives)
  • Prepare educational materials for schools
  • Develop an interactive website.

Purpose

Today, the mission of the London Women’s History Project is:

  • to raise greater consciousness of the events, organizations and individuals influential in improving the lives of women in London
  • to preserve the records of a significant period in history by establishing a permanent archive of women’s history in the London area, focusing mainly on the period 1960 to 2000, and thereby…
  • to support research by historians, students, teachers and the media, as well as to enable women to better understand the genesis of many of the economic, educational and social benefits they enjoy today
  • to develop a dialogue with younger women to inspire them to continue to work toward women’s true equality.

Since 2004, members of the London Women’s History Project have worked with staff from the University of Western Ontario Archives, “Western Archives”, to locate, identify, acquire, organize, preserve and make available, subject to appropriate restrictions, various organizational records and personal papers that have been collected. Also included are transcripts of oral interviews with women who provided leadership during this period.

These documents, from various sources, are now preserved in the Western Archives where they form part of the “London Womens’ History Group Collection”.  Instructions as to accessing these materials are available here:

What Inspired Us

The London Women’s History Project reflects the concerns of several local women, i.e., that there were no public records of the experiences and achievements of London women who were effective in making significant and permanent changes in the lives of women in the local community, particularly during the years from 1960 to 2000.

These women feared that this special history would be lost as memories failed and women’s personal and organizational documents were lost or forgotten in attics and basements.
