Local Connections: Oberlin Heritage Center and the Amistad Rebellion

Published by Mary Fizell, Tamara Lugonzo, and Scott Smalley

Through collective research and great collaboration with the Oberlin Heritage Center, we managed to collate information about the rich history of Oberlin with the origins of both the College and the Heritage Center and its connections with key moments in history such as the abolitionist movement and the Amistad Rebellion. The webinar was an exciting learning experience and we hope you pick up on the passion of Oberlin Heritage Center Director, Liz Schultz, and Education & Tour Coordinator, Amanda Manahan. During our discussion, we explore Oberlin’s role in transatlantic antislavery and how the Heritage Center continues to play an active role in those efforts through its preservation of the historic sites such as the Little Red Schoolhouse.

This Webinar is hosted by Huron University undergrad Scott Smalley, and produced by Huron undergrads Mary Fizell and Tamara Lugonzo for their class, “History 2709F: Race, Rights, and Revolution”.
