Provenance A: Binding  Bound in blind-tooled brown calf with gilt crest of John Hearne (1795-1849) on front board and dentelles on inner boards. See, John Hearne. Black leather sleve contains gilt title on spine. Contains marbled pastedowns and endpapers and foredges heavily cropped. Binder ticket on first endpaper reads “Kelly Binder 15 Gower Place”.
Provenance B: Ownership Marks Copy contains armorial bookplate of William Russell, Duke of Bedford (1809-1872) (Franks 25709) on inner front pastedown, and pencil inscription “Bedford” on verso of front endpaper. Armorial bookplate of Henry J.B. Clements (1869-1940) on recto of front endpaper. Inner back board contains diamond bookplate reading “Downing Chaucer’s Head Birmingham”. Library book stamp on p. 21 reads “Victoria and Albert Museum Library”. For more details see A Catalogue.
Provenance C: Annotations Copy contains expertly coloured arms surrounded by supplementary heraldic designs throughout, and a select number of tricked arms. Early and later MS. supplements, and corrections found throughout, including additional notes which extend Brooke’s geneologies into the nineteenth century. Final printed table contains supplementary entries on recto and a recipe written on verso, both in an early hand.
