Provenance B: Ownership Marks | Copy contains inscription at the top of title page that reads, “This buike belongs to John Lord Borthwik 12 July 1632.” This is likely a reference to the 9th Lord Borthwick, 1616-1675. For more on Borthwick see Lord Borthwick. |
Provenance C: Annotations | Copy has been expertly coloured throughout. Title page has an annotation, in Borthwick’s hand, reading “The found stane of Borthuik Castle was laid uon the ii day of April 1431 / upon the 12 of July 1446 the Lord Borthuik founded a bastel hous at Cruikstoun for his second son John.” Verso of title page contains a lengthy annotation titled “Observes be Thomas Lord Binning anent[?] what claim the hous of Cruikstoun may hereafter have to the honour and rank of Lord Borthuik”. On sigs. 2K4r-v, the same hand adds a text headed “The geneologie of the hous of Borthuik”. Supplementary annotations in multiple hands found throughout. See for example sigs.
