Provenance A: Binding  Bound in gold-tooled diced brown calf. Boards have inner gilt dentelles and marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Spine contains six compartments with title “Brooke’s Heraldry” in compartment two and “1622” at foot, all in gilt.
Provenance B: Ownership Marks Copy contains Walpole book label with “Ex Museo Arbuteano W.S. Lewis” and armorial bookplate of the Duke of Somerset (Franks 27571) on inner front pastedown. Armorial bookplate of the Royal Library at Cambridge on verso of title page. For more on the Royal Library bookplate, see here. Armorial bookplate of William Cole on verso of printed dedication (Franks 6367). Inscription on verso of title page reads “Duplicate out of the Royal Library of Cambridge sold by Auction by an order of the University in the Law Schools Dec. 4 174[?]”. Provenance C: Annotations Copy contains numerous corrections and supplements in Cole’s hand throughout. Most of the annotations are to Cole’s own manuscript volumes, especially volumes 49 and 50, but others are to a variety of printed works in English, French and Latin.
