| Provenance A: Binding | Bound in early blind- and gold-tooled calf with reddened fore-edges. Spine contains seven compartments with title “Brooke’s Catalogue” on red label in compartment two and monogram cipher of Essex in compartment 3, both in gilt. Monogram cipher is of George Capell-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex (1757-1839). Cipher is close to stamps 2-4 in British Armorial Database, but differs slightly. |
| Provenance B: Ownership Marks | Copy contains two early ink signatures on inner front board with one reading “Daniel [???] his book,” and another reading “Na[??]a[?] Thomas.” Initials “D. E.” in ink on title page. Bookdealer codes in pencil on first front endpaper. University of Chicago bookplate on inner front pastedown and library stamp on verso of title page. Early twentieth-century printed book dealer descriptions with prices for different 1619 and 1622 editions of Brooke’s Catalogue pasted on inner front board. |
