Mrs. G.F. Harris

Mrs. Harris printed alongside her husband who acquired a press from John M’Creery. The couple worked on Houton Street in Liverpool from 1805 until Mr. Harris’ death. Mrs. Harris continued to run the shop printing under the name “G.F. Harris’s widow” until she began working with her brothers-in-law at which time they printed first as “G.F. Harris’ widow and brothers” then as “Harris and Co.” The press was closed in 1834.
The copy of The Fly Fisher’s Guide included in this exhibition suggests Harris’ commitment to the art of book making. It features several high-quality colour print-plates and carefully laid out type. The Harris press is remembered for its artistry and commitment to expanding its technological capacities.
