The final edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s\u00a0The Rime of the Ancient Mariner<\/em> reflecting the author’s intended changes was published posthumously in 1834. Coleridge died on July 25th, 1834 of heart failure and an undiagnosed, unknown lung disease–potentially caused by his opium addiction. The 1834 text, pictured below, is used is most contemporary teachings of Coleridge’s iconic poem. It is the text with the most\u00a0scholarly authority;\u00a0<\/strong>a claim supported by its status as the last documentation of Coleridge’s authorial intent for his poem.<\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned in our rationale,\u00a0The Rimes of the Ancyent Marinere\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>propose an argument in favour of \u00a0\u201cthe most authoritative version of <\/span>a work [as] the earliest rather than the latest.\u201d (\u201cThe Multiple Versions of Coleridge\u2019s Poems: How Many \u2018Mariners\u2019 Did Coleridge Write?\u201d 127).<\/span><\/p>\n

That being said,\u00a0we encourage an initial read-through of the 1798 edition of\u00a0The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere<\/em>\u00a0before indulging the 1834 edition.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

How a Ship having passed the Line was driven by storms to the cold Country towards the South Pole; and how from thence she made her course to the tropical Latitude of the Great Pacific Ocean<\/span>; and of the strange things that befell; and in what manner the Ancyent Marinere came back to his own Country.<\/span><\/p>\n

PART I<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It is an ancient Mariner,<\/span><\/p>\n

And he stoppeth one of three.<\/span><\/p>\n

‘By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,<\/span><\/p>\n

Now wherefore <\/span>stopp’st thou me?<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bridegroom’s doors are opened wide,<\/span><\/p>\n

The Night-mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she,<\/span><\/p>\n
